چکیده

Abstract Among all iron oxides, hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ), goethite (α-FeOOH), and ferrihydrite (FeOOH⋅ n H O) are the most common mineral species. While immobilization of Mo 6+ by surface adsorption on ferric oxides has been studied extensively, mechanisms incorporation in their structure have researched little. The objective this study was to investigate relation between content its structural hematite, goethite, six-line a combination X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), powder diffraction (pXRD), inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Synthesized presence Mo, phases incorporated up 8.52, 0.03, 17.49 wt. % respectively. For pXRD analyses did not indicate separate phases. Refined unit-cell parameters correlated with increasing concentration goethite. indicated an increase disorder within both and, therefore, supported Analysis measurements Mo-bearing ferrihydrites revealed small amounts coprecipitated akaganéite. near edge (XANES) at L -edge strong distortion MoO 6 octahedra three Fitting extended fine (EXAFS) spectra K such distorted coordination environment similar Fe position investigated specimen. Incorporation of Uranium into Hematite during Crystallization from Ferrihydrite

Ferrihydrite was exposed to U(VI)-containing cement leachate (pH 10.5) and aged to induce crystallization of hematite. A combination of chemical extractions, TEM, and XAS techniques provided the first evidence that adsorbed U(VI) (≈3000 ppm) was incorporated into hematite during ferrihydrite aggregation and the early stages of crystallization, with continued uptake occurring during hematite rip...

Control of Earth-like magnetic fields on the transformation of ferrihydrite to hematite and goethite

Hematite and goethite are the two most abundant iron oxides in natural environments. Their formation is controlled by multiple environmental factors; therefore, their relative concentration has been used widely to indicate climatic variations. In this study, we aimed to test whether hematite and goethite growth is influenced by ambient magnetic fields of Earth-like values. Ferrihydrite was aged...

EFFECT OF pH ON THE FORMATION OF GOETHITE AND HEMATITE FROM FERRIHYDRITE

Abstraet~Storage of ferrihydrite in aqueous suspensions at 24~ and pHs between 2.5 and 12 for as long as three years resulted in the formation of goethite and hematite. The proportions and crystallinity of these products varied widely with the pH. Maximum hematite was formed between pH 7 and 8, and maximum goethite at pH 4 and at pH 12. The crystallinity of both products, as indicated by X-ray ...

Limited reduction of ferrihydrite encrusted by goethite in freshwater sediment.

Many physical and chemical processes control the extent of Fe(III) oxyhydroxide reduction by dissimilatory Fe(III)-reducing bacteria. The surface precipitation of secondary Fe minerals on Fe(III) oxyhydroxides limits the extent of microbial Fe(III) reduction, but this phenomenon has not yet been observed in nature. This paper reports the observation of secondary Fe-mineral (goethite) encrustati...

Controls on the Fate and Speciation of Np(V) During Iron (Oxyhydr)oxide Crystallization.

The speciation and fate of neptunium as Np(V)O2(+) during the crystallization of ferrihydrite to hematite and goethite was explored in a range of systems. Adsorption of NpO2(+) to iron(III) (oxyhydr)oxide phases was reversible and, for ferrihydrite, occurred through the formation of mononuclear bidentate surface complexes. By contrast, chemical extractions and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS...
